Departmental Overview

The Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE), at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) focuses on achieving comprehensive public investments which enable and reward the early childhood workforce to deliver high-quality care and education for all children. To achieve this goal, CSCCE conducts cutting-edge research and proposes policy solutions aimed at improving how our nation prepares, supports, and rewards the early care and education workforce to ensure young children’s optimal development. As a result of this work, policymakers and their staff, thought leaders in the field, and other stakeholders use CSCCE’s research and recommendations to inform policy decisions that support the early care and education workforce.

IRLE is an “Organized Research Unit” of the University of California at Berkeley. IRLE brings together faculty from several academic departments and supports multidisciplinary research about labor and employment relations. IRLE sponsors many research centers, including the California Public Employee Relations, Center for Labor Research and Education, the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, and the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE). It publishes the widely respected academic journal, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, and houses an important research library that collects and preserves a wide array of information about work, organizations and labor issues.


This position will provide program and administrative support to the Center Director and Director Emerita of the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE). The position will provide project support related to research and information gathering and CSCCE’s ongoing archival project, developing presentation material, and administrative support such as calendaring, note taking, email management, and organizing and maintaining online and physical files.

Ӣ Coordinate and provide support to directors for internal and external meetings. This includes recording notes, preparing memos and tracking project tasks.
Ӣ Prepare presentation materials such as graphs, charts, slide presentations.
Ӣ Provide general administrative support to directors including scheduling, making travel arrangements, processing reimbursements.
Ӣ Read and reviewing incoming memos, emails and requests and distribute them as needed.
Ӣ Assist directors to compile information and resources from electronic and physical files to inform the research and policy projects.
Ӣ Organize and maintain electronic and paper files including project and archive files.

Required Qualifications

Ӣ Previous office experience
Ӣ Preparation of reports and documents including creating charts and figures and power point presentations.
Ӣ Strong computer skills to work in MS Office and Google suites.
Ӣ Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and gather information from electronic resources.
Ӣ Demonstrated experience in organizing and maintaining record systems.
Ӣ Excellent interpersonal communication skills both verbally and in writing.
Ӣ Documented ability of strong report writing skills.
Ӣ Demonstrated ability to make complex scheduling arrangements involving multiple parties and locations.
Ӣ Ability to organize a daily workload by priorities and manage competing deadlines.
Ӣ Attention to high level of detail and accuracy a must.
Ӣ Ability to follow directions and work with little supervision in a fastpaced environment with shifting priorities.
Ӣ Ability to take initiative and followup are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with academic institutions; prior experience with UC Berkeley a plus. Ӣ Interest in labor and social and economic justice issues, particularly as they impact children, families, and the early education workforce. Ӣ Experience with Smartsheet and Adobe InDesign.
